VTG 1959 Suffering Moses Srinagar Kashmir Wool Rug 44x83 Floral Hand-Made
$ 849.00
What you’ll love about this extraordinary vintage 1959 Suffering Moses rug is its intricate floral pattern and exquisite hand-craftsmanship — a rare example of mid-century Kashmiri textile artistry blending fine wool with timeless design. The palette of dusty blue, brick red, and tan radiates quiet sophistication and artisan warmth.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition overall. The wool pile is clean, vibrant, and odor-free from a non-smoking, pet-free estate. Only flaw: a split in the burlap backing and a 9" fray along the center seam (shown). Can be folded safely for shipping.
Provenance Note:
This exquisite mid-century rug was handmade by Suffering Moses of Srinagar, Kashmir, one of the region’s most respected artisan houses. The Suffering Moses workshop was founded by a master craftsman known simply as Moses—a legendary artist and philosopher whose shop was once a pilgrimage site for collectors and travelers.
As described by visitors in the 20th century, Moses explained the name “Suffering Moses” as symbolic of the devotion and discipline required to create beauty: “How else could I make anything beautiful? Only by suffering for my art.” His pieces, whether in papier mâché, wood, or wool, were admired for their intricacy, symbolism, and deep spiritual quality. The workshop continued under his descendants and became renowned for museum-grade craftsmanship in fine carpets, embroidery, and decorative arts.
This particular rug dates to 1959 and was part of a collection acquired by L. V. Collings, Vice-President of Standard Vacuum Oil Company, during his travels through Asia.
